Wedding Album Woes

Now that I'm officially finished with my wedding day recaps, I can admit to you my wedding album woes.

Specifically, that we don't have one.

And its my fault.

not my album, via

You see, we paid for a wedding album. And our photographer provided us with so many wonderful photos that I really, really want one. But . . . somehow I let it slip through the cracks. I e-mailed her in the beginning of October of 2010 to check in about the wedding album and she responded that a 30 page book and one design was included in our package and asked me to pick 80-100 photos.

But, there hasn't been anything else said on the subject.

Let me explain. At the time, I just couldn't handle choosing the pictures. The wedding was still too new. I didn't want to look at the photos at all, let alone choose photos for our wedding album. I didn't want to the responsibility of choosing the photos. A handful of favorites, maybe. But, every single picture? It seemed too overwhelming.

But did I express any of my thoughts of feelings to her like a logical person? No. Instead, I told myself that I would respond to her e-mail later and avoided thinking about the subject.

Well, its six months later and I can't seem to avoid the subject anymore.

And I feel so dumb for dropping the ball like this. She even offered to look at the photos with me over beers!  Why oh why did I not take her up on that? Obviously, I messed up. Big time. But, the thing is. I want an album. So what do I do?

I feel ridiculous e-mailing her out of the blue almost a year after our wedding. I don't want to be an inconvenience.

So I need some help! What do you think I should do? Is it okay to e-mail her, apologize for my complete lack of communication, and bring up our wedding album? Or, do you think we've missed our chance and I should look into hiring someone else to design our album? Did you get a wedding album? What was your experience like?

Just to be clear, I absolutely loved my photographer. She is easy to get along with, fun, and talented. I think this album situation is pretty much my fault. If I could do everything over again, I would definitely still hire Alix! If any Chicago brides out there have any questions on what it was like to work with Alix, don't hesitate to e-mail me at marriedinchicago@gmail.com.

  1. I say if you want an album, and you paid for it with your package, you have every right to call her up and ask her to work on it. Do it soon, aka before wedding season gets in full-swing. I trusted our photographers with picking the photos and designing the album for us. They sent me a proof, which I quickly skimmed and approved, and had the album shortly thereafter. I just didn't want the hassle of looking through 700+ pics and choosing the best ones. No thanks. So I just let them do it! Good luck and I hope you get your album soon. :)

  3. If you paid for it, then you shouldn't feel bad asking for it. Just shoot her an e-mail and see if she's still up for beers and pictures! Don't make up excuses though, every one knows that life get's busy. ;)

  4. I am 100% with EmilyB - you paid for it already. She is still willing and able to do it. I would just shoot her a nice email, apologize for the delay, and tell her you trust her to make some good decisions.
We waited a WHILE and kept pushing it off because I felt like I needed/wanted control over the whole thing. In reality I could have let them choose the photos and it still would have been a perfect representation of the day.
I hate doing things like this but - you can DO it! Email her today, it will make you feel so much better.

  6. I think this is really common (waiting a year or more). Don't be embarrassed! Go get that album.

  7. I think this probably happens a lot more often than you'd think and she'll totally understand. Email her or call her and remind her of her offer and ask if she'd meet you for some beers to go over it. It sounds like fun and girl - you PAID for it already!

  8. Aww.. I am sure its more common than you think. She sounds like a great person, just talk to her. She may even be expecting your call!

  9. I found your website through a comment you made on another blog. I'm a fellow Chicagoan. I encourage you to contact your photographer -- I'm sure she's wondering what happened and hopping you like your pictures, so she's probably eager to hear from you and get this settled.

  14. Thank you SO MUCH!!!!!!! You're advice and support gave me the push I needed and I just sent our photographer an e-mail.

    I feel SO relieved :)

It was really helpful to hear that I'm not the only person on the face of the planet who has put this off. And I didn't even think about how she might be worried that we didn't like the photos or what not.

When I started second guessing myself before I hit "send" I just came back here and read through the comments to reassure myself.

Thank you! I can honestly say I wouldn't have gotten back in touch with her if not for you guys!

  15. Definitely ask her! I agree with what's been said above if you've paid for it you should for sure ask. Just apologize like you were saying and be like I'd love to take you up on that offer of going through the photos over beer and see what she says! You know what the worst thing that could happen is? She won't respond which isn't horrible but I highly doubt she'll do that so go for it and email her :)

  18. You did the right thing! From the photographer's perspective, this actually tends to be more common than not. If she didn't put a time limit on it, you're still okay! Hope this all works out for you.

I just got my wedding album last week. Oh my gosh - it's the best thing ever! You'll be so happy when you get the final product :)

  21. Just explain to her your situation, how you weren't ready. Be honest and she'll appreciate it. If you need a plan B, you can also go online to a number of sites and create your own book. But I think your first option will work if you bite the bullet and give it a try.
