But, its my balcony. And so I plan to make the most of our little piece of outside. But, right now we don't have much more going on other than a few dead plants and dirty plastic chairs.
Yikes! I am so sorry you had to see that. But, I'm convinced that the space has potential. Just look at these beauties.
So, I've come up with a plan to beautify our balcony. First, I'd first like to add a brightly colored 5X8 out-door rug made from recycled polypropylene.

Then, I'd like to upgrade our seating and bring in a little table. I think we have just enough room for a small bistro table and two chairs. I can already imagine us resting our drinks on the table.

Lastly, the balcony can no longer be where plants go to die. I'd like to invest in two flower boxes to decorate our railing.

Even though these changes are pretty basic, I think they will make a huge difference. I can't wait to share the "after" pictures with you!
Do you have a backyard, balcony, or patio? Do you use it often? How do you decorate it? What do you think of my plan to make the most of our balcony?

Train tracks or no train tracks, OWN your balcony! Do you know how much I would kill for one? It's one of those things that you can't really prioritize when you're on a tight budget with a huge set of criteria for an apartment, so we've never had one. But when summer comes, I am so incredibly jealous of those who do have them! I would crash your place just to hang out on your balcony. :)
ReplyDeleteI have a balcony I love! Right now it is a little run down because of the winter but during the spring I have a little table and chairs and lots of healthy plants! I love sitting out there!
ReplyDeletewow, right now I'm working on a post just like this one!! LOVE your inspiration photos : ) I think my favorites are #3 & 5. Excited to see the results!
ReplyDeleteAnni - you are right, we are lucky to have one! I think I'll feel like spending more time on it once its spruced up. Right now, its pretty dreary :)
ReplyDeleteJulie - I feel you! Winter has torn are balcony up! It doesn't help that I never brought up two plants and so they are just sitting there dead. I need to figure out what plants can survive on our windy balcony.
April - haha. thats funny! I just ready another too on another blog. Tis the season, I guess!
Maybe wooly pockets can help brighten the view :)
ReplyDeleteA table and chairs will make a world of difference as will the rug. And it will also help once we get some consistent sunshine this spring!
Oh you can TOTALLY make that work. Some plans, that little white tent, some vintage knick knacks, that could totally work!
ReplyDeleteI love the CB2 rug, it is so vibrant that it can definitely stand up to the lush colors of summer. If you have room on the patio and room in the budget, I'd add a ceramic garden stool since they are really versatile and stand up well to the weather. I like this one from Overstock:

Tara - I had to look up what wooly pockets were :) It would be cool to have those hang over our balcony because they would also cover up some of the bars and add privacy. Great recommendation!
ReplyDeleteClare - Thanks for the vote of confidence! I think you are right - I need to find some accessories to give it a bit more style.
Jerith - I absolutely love the idea of a ceramic garden stool! I worry about the wind knocking it done, but it could live in our living room and then just be brought outside when we are out there. Thanks!
I love the mosquito netting in that one picture! The flower boxes will definitely brighten up the place.
ReplyDeleteWe have a patio/deck - it really isn't decorated because in-terms of space/what we use it for (drinking wine outside in the summer and grilling), it isn't really an entertaining space. God some of those balconies were just gorgeous though!
ReplyDeletei love that first inspiration pic! excited to see how your balcony turns out.
ReplyDeleteI love the balcony pictures you found. They make me feel like vacation!
ReplyDeleteGo enjoy your balcony! Hopefully you have some sunshinney weather in which to do so :)
YAH for outdoor dining and balconies :) i just hope the weather warms up soon!! xoxo jcd :: cornflake dreams
ReplyDeleteps joelle did a great job on your signature! too cute!
I think my favorite is the one with the gauze/netting! We do the same thing with our outdoor area. Always have high expectations, but right now it's just the grill and some old dirty chairs! Stopping by from Lady's Blogger Tea party :)
ReplyDeletegreat plans! Hope you can find what you are looking for :) Stopping by from the LBS tea party!
ReplyDeleteJudging from those pictures, your balcony has lots of potential!!

So back in my Boston days I was right there with ya, Sister! A few things I did to spiff up my little plot was a small windowbox that hooks to the patio walls; a bunch of pots of ferns and herbs and easy to care for stuff.
ReplyDeleteI'm so jealous you live in Chicago! My husband and I visit there at least once a year and I swoon every time. Sports, food, history...all the things we lack here in MN.
Also? So glad I found you...or you found me, really! Loving your blog!
